Painting as expression, restoration, and possibility.

Brett Hiatt is an Army veteran and Snohomish County artist whose paintings draw from a lifetime of travel, observation, and imagination. Although he has drawn since childhood, retirement gave him the time to commit himself seriously to painting in 2019.

Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, with occasional oil painting, Brett chooses colors and forms intuitively. Creating with red-green color blindness has shaped a deeply personal relationship with color—one guided by contrast, emotion, and what feels right for each scene.

Brett has drawn since childhood, but retirement finally gave him the time to make painting a serious part of his life. His Army service and travels exposed him to memorable landscapes that continue to influence his work. Other scenes come from imagination, emotion, and places he still hopes to visit.

Art also gives Brett a way to slow down, clear his mind, and return to a more peaceful place. Beyond the canvas, he enjoys bringing a sketchpad to gatherings, drawing people in pencil and graphite, and giving the portraits to the people who inspired them.

“When someone looks at my paintings, I hope they enjoy them as much—or more—than I enjoyed painting them.”

— Brett Hiatt
